Hemi-Kids
is an email support group where parents of infants and children
who have mild to moderate hemiplegia or hemiplegic cerebral palsy share
support and information. Hemi-Kids was created to serve
a group of children who tend to "fall through the
cracks". In many ways, these children live a pretty
"typical" life and often don't quite fit into the world of
children who have disabilities. Yet, they don't quite fit
into the "typically developing" world, either. The
parents on Hemi-Kids understand the challenges of parenting a
child with mild to moderate hemiplegia.
When you found out that your baby or toddler had hemiplegia,
hemiparesis or cerebral palsy, did you feel like you were the only parent going through this? We'd
like for you to know that you are not alone. Hemi-Kids is a
world-wide network of over 1,100 families of children who have mild to
moderate hemiplegia
or hemiplegic cerebral palsy. These children have hemiplegia
for many different reasons: infant or childhood unilateral stroke survivors,
children who have had a
hemispherectomy, a
brain tumor, a traumatic brain injury, unilateral brain bleed due to
prematurity, the result of an infection, and a host of other more
rare causes.
Join other parents
of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy and share your thoughts,
ideas, support, advocacy tips, stories, and more. We also have some terrific
adults who have had hemiplegia since childhood and they
share their thoughts and experiences with us.
Recent
quote from a parent on the Hemi-Kids email list: "I was not sure at first if I should participate in a group such as this, but I realized that it didn't matter what my son could or couldn't do compared to other kids on the list. What mattered
to me was that these parents understood my feelings of anxiety and
frustration, excitement and pride of parenting. They didn't care what the issue was I was facing, they cared about supporting me in that issue. Because even if it was a non-issue for them, it was an issue to me and that's all that mattered."
Joining Hemi-Kids is a good way to
find
referrals in your area to physical or occupational therapists, pediatric
neurologists, and learning disability specialists. Parents
also discuss how to work with the special education programs, how to
include their child in community programs, provide each
other with emotional support, and offer a place where people understand
what you're going through.
